Mixing prints is a staple in my wardrobe. And while it’s not as easy as integrating solids, I find the creativity and openings in your style are endless when doing so. Case it point, today I mixed a printed tie with a patterned shirt. The sportsmen themed neckwear harkened to classic Americana. I’m not a marksman but other elements of classic hunting attire have crossed the threshold into modern menswear and the duck tie is no different. I added some fun with colored shoelaces and the rest was history.

Dressing up madras today with a plaid shirt and a pastel purple blazer. Summer is tough when trying to look professional but still keeping your cool. The lightweight shirt means I won’t sweat to death, and the cuffed up chinos allow for a little ventilation. I kept the hues in light chalky colors so even in the mid-90’s the sun won’t be a killer.

Mixing together plaid, stripes and polka dots in my workwear today. All three have an element of navy. The other colors, the chocolate brown and the light blue plaid are replicated in other elements of the accessories. The knit tie provides texture in interesting colors and the knit blazer allows the flexibility of a sweater yet the formality of a blazer. A cuff on the slim denim and I’m ready to fight the weather on the cooler, windy day.

March Plaid-Ness

Old rules dictate that a patterned tie over a patterned shirt is a faux pas. Maybe the rules haven’t changed, but merely there’s an addendum to the former beliefs. I’m doing a plaid tie over a plaid shirt today and it’s able to work for a few simple reasons. Chiefly, the tie and shirt share a common color, in this case being navy. Furthermore, the shirt only has two colors in it. The simplicity of it makes it easier to mix patterns. Finally, I broke it up a bit with a solid cardigan over it too.

I also added a bit more panache with the aqua lightweight chinos. The ability to dress up or down the pant no matter how warm it gets means you’ll be seeing more of it soon.
