Mixing it up with different patterns combined together into one cohesive look. I’m rocking a linen/wool blazer that has light blue and charcoal within the beige color. Despite the fact that the jacket is patterned, I still opted for a gingham shirt since the blue shade was present in both. The tie has specks of beige, light blue and grey, which makes it tie everything together. The wood tie bar, courtesy of DIBI ties, adds a bit of panache as well.

What inspires the color choices you make in your wardrobe? Is it the color scheme in the store you bought it at? Do you wear oranges and reds in the fall that mimic changes in nature?

I like to be inspired in different ways to chose the hues of the day. Art can sometimes be a powerful tool in deciding what shade to use. Pop art, like that of Andy Warhol, uses bold color schemes and these alternative pairings really stand out in both the art and fashion world. Whether your palette involves chinos and ties or brush and canvas, try to be inspired by the nontraditional.

Brightly colored gingham shirts are a personal staple of mine in spring. When the weather starts hitting 70, I’ll keep the tie in the closet and just opt for a pocket square. I like how lime, chocolate and sky blue colors play off of each other. The slim knit blazer is a thin cotton. There’s a pattern on the back of the collar, so I popped it up to add a little panache. To add a little “ankle intrigue” I cuffed up the jeans and added some blue laces as well.

Earth(tone) Day

In Portland, Maine on city 4 of our road trip. Cobblestone streets, shopping and unbelievable food make this town hard to leave.

Since we were in downtown right on the water, I needed heavier layers. I opted for a flannel plaid shirt with a waxed cotton jacket over. The varying shades of brown dictated the other colors of the ensemble.

March Plaid-Ness

Old rules dictate that a patterned tie over a patterned shirt is a faux pas. Maybe the rules haven’t changed, but merely there’s an addendum to the former beliefs. I’m doing a plaid tie over a plaid shirt today and it’s able to work for a few simple reasons. Chiefly, the tie and shirt share a common color, in this case being navy. Furthermore, the shirt only has two colors in it. The simplicity of it makes it easier to mix patterns. Finally, I broke it up a bit with a solid cardigan over it too.

I also added a bit more panache with the aqua lightweight chinos. The ability to dress up or down the pant no matter how warm it gets means you’ll be seeing more of it soon.

I linked below some of the items so you can get them yourself!

Whale Watching

Temps are peaking in the mid-40s all week, so it felt like high time to break out boat shoes today. Along with loafers, boat shoes give structure and are classic footwear for warmer weather. With their versatility, whether wearing with a cuffed chino or with shorts to the beach, it’s wise to invest in a quality pair.

I love the print on this Uniqlo tie. It’s somewhere in-between a floral and bandana print. I threw it over a windowpane plaid woven. Over that I put on a shawl cotton cardigan which bring out the blue of the tie. The collegiate-striped J. Press watch strap continues the same colors of the tie as well.

Haute Spot

When building this outfit, I started off with a plaid woven shirt with elements of green, navy, and white. To accentuate the green, I added a green bandana-esque pocket square. The bolder print, dot silk tie picks out the other colors in the shirt as well.

I’m still somewhere in between winter and spring in terms of the materials I’m wearing. Although I’ve retired most of the heavier sweaters and cords for the year, aspects of the winter wardrobe like the blazer I’m wearing today are still being integrated. The accessories definitely have lightened in terms of material. But the heavier suiting jacket is somewhat required until it warms a bit.

Cold Patch

With the spring season starting, Mother Nature has been hesitant to raise the temps in the northeast. For the most part, the weather has not eclipsed 40 degrees on most days. My outfit today is indicative of the changing season because despite the lighter colors it’s actually pretty warm.

The emerald green Shetland lambswool sweater I’m wearing is a great texture for these cooler days. The color really pops and the elbow patches are a nice touch; they are professorial-esque. I went with a taupe jean to play off the green color and I paired the two together with camouflage desert boots. The pastel plaid woven underneath adds a springy element to the ensemble as well.

Wearing an all denim ensemble today with a Hill-Side Ikat tie as the statement piece. The bold print stands out against the solid background. I accessorized my outfit with brown leather in the shoes, the belt and the watch strap. Have fun this season with printed ties to add excitement to your solids!

In the Navy

Stripes are all the rage this season. In the same way vintage military wear has permeated the fashion world for the better part of a decade, the influence of vintage naval wear is pervasive as well. There’s something simple about a striped knit and it’s contrast. I also think it’s a virile look too.

I paired the rest of the attire today off the striped knit. The classic idea would be to wear a light woven and navy bottoms, but I flipped the script, reversing the layers. Doing a bit of stacking on the wrist with a Timex Andros watch with a gold strap for a pop, the Maritime Supply Co rope bracelet and the Miansai anchor bracelet.
